Subject: Chad J Alvarado, 38 yoa
 

Summary of Incident:
On August 2, 2011 the Tomah Police Department received an all points bulletin (APB) from the Wisconsin Dept of Corrections.  The APB indicated that a subject, Chad J Alvarado, was wanted for escaping from the Flambeau Correctional Center.   The Flambeau Correctional Center is located in Hawkins Wisconsin which is in Sawyer County.  The APB did not mention an area or location where Alvarado may be at or headed to.

On August 2, 2011 at approx 630pm the Tomah Police Department received information that Chad Alvarado had checked himself into a hotel in Tomah.  Subsequent investigation confirmed that Alvarado had checked into the hotel using an alias name and that he was currently not in the motel room.

Officers from the Tomah Police Department, Sparta Police Department, and Monroe County Sheriff’s Department began  conducting business checks on the north end of Tomah in an attempt to locate Alvarado.

While conducting the business checks a subject matching Alvarado’s description was seen running into the woods near the Ho Chunk Cinema.  A perimeter was established in and around the area where Alvarado was last seen.

Officers searched the area using police canine units from the Sparta Police Department, Onalaska Police Department, and the Wisconsin State Patrol.  While conducting the foot search of the area the 107^th Aviation Unit, based out of Decatur Illinois, offered to fly the area using a Black Hawk Helicopter with night vision capabilities.  The 107^th Aviation Unit had been conducting night operations at Ft. McCoy.

Alvarado was not located.  The search for Alvarado was called off at approximately 1:00 a.m.

On August 3, 2011 at approximately  6:50 a.m. the Monroe County Communications Center received a phone call from a resident on Foley Avenue.  Foley Avenue is located near the area being searched.   The resident advised that there was an unknown subject that was seen in their camper located in their backyard.

Officers from the Tomah Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, and the Wisconsin State Patrol responded to the residence.  The subject, later ID’d as Alvarado, was ordered out of the camper.  Alvarado was taken into custody without incident.

Alvarado was transported to the Monroe County Jail.
